MARION - Fort Madison had a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the third against host Linn-Mar on Friday, but ended up dropping a heartbreaker on the final play.

Playing in the Linn-Mar/Alburnette tourney on Friday, the Hounds got home runs from freshman Lexi Whaley, a solo in the second, and a three-run liner to left in the third that gave Fort Madison the 6-0 lead, only to have that lead washed away for a 7-6 loss.

Linn-Mar would get one run in the bottom half of the third on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Bloodhound hurler Neeley Rehm would get out of the inning on the next two hitters, but the Lions would get to Rehm in the fifth for five runs all with no outs before a rain delay settled things down. Out of the delay Rehm would get the Lions 1-2-3, to end the inning, but not before a sac fly drove in the fifth run to tie things up at 6.

The seventh inning started with runners at 2nd base for both teams in the tournament play rules.

Emily Steffensmeier was placed at 2nd for Fort Madison in the top half. Rehm would then single to short center holding Steffensmeier at the bag. Logan Johnson then grounded to third to force Steffensmeier. Courtesy runner Aija Jenkins moved to second and Johnson reached on the fielder's choice.

Erika Kruse then grounded out back to the pitcher to end the threat leaving two stranded.

Kaylece Morgan was placed at 2nd for the Lions in the bottom half, and then a dropped third strike allowed her to advance. The throw down from Whaley to first got away allowing Morgan to come all the way around for the game-winning run.

The Lions moved to 21-7 with the win. Fort Madison fell to 6-14 with the loss. The second game of the night with Center Point was called in the first inning due to rain.

Whaley went 2-for-3 with the two homers and had 4 RBI and two runs scored. Kylee Cashman also had two hits and the other RBI for Fort Madison.

Rehm gave up six runs all earned on seven hits, while fanning four and walking six in the loss.

The Hounds (6-14, 3-7) are scheduled to take on Fairfield in a Southeast Conference doubleheader in Fort Madison Monday night.
