LEE COUNTY - Lee County Supervisors are still looking at where to hold future supervisors meetings now that the pandemic appears to be in the rearview mirror.

The board moved their meetings to the North Lee County office building to hold meetings via Zoom when COVID numbers were dangerously high. Local and state law enforcement also clamped down on public visits to county and state correctional facilities to help try and keep the virus out of jail and prison populations.

Most of the board has been open to keeping the meetings at the Fort Madison location, but District 3 Supervisor Rich Harlow has expressed concerns for the safety of the board at the North Lee County location.

Harlow said at a previous meeting that gun violence is still prevalent in the country and he thought it was not as safe for supervisors to meet in Fort Madison, and the sheriff's office in Montrose was a safer location.

However, members of the public who want to attend the meetings at the sheriff's office have to be buzzed into back office space to attend the meetings if they show up after the meeting starts.

Other supervisors have pointed to the added armed security at the North Lee County office building where a full-time security officer checks everyone entering the building before they reach county service counters. However, checks aren't made on those who enter the supervisors meeting room.

All entry is now through the east door of the office building, and exit is through the south doors, so everyone using county services has to go through a security check prior to getting to the service counters.

In other action:
• supervisors will be considering the hiring of the final EMT for the new ambulance service that officially begins service on June 30.
• consider replacing a records clerk in the Treasurer's office
