MT. PLEASANT - It took the Bloodhounds a little while to get going, but they poured it on late in sweeping Mt. Pleasant at the Mapleleaf Complex Thursday night 8-2 and 16-6 to move to 21-4 on the year.

Fort Madison hasn't had a 20-win season since the 2007 when they went 30-6.

As of June 28, the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association still had Fort Madison ranked 10th in the state with a 16-4 record, but the Hounds have reeled off five straight wins and are off now until a Monday clash at Burlington with a possible conference title on the line.

The Grayhounds are 14-1 in Southeast Conference play with a doubleheader tonight against Mt. Pleasant, and then two final conference games with the Hounds Monday night.

The Hounds are currently 14-2 and are off until Monday night. But they have two final conference games scheduled with Keokuk on July 12.

Thursday night, Mt. Pleasant jumped out to a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fifth. Kane Williams would score with two outs on a sacrifice fly to right by Vasin Thurman to cut the lead to 2-1

Fort Madison would take the lead in the sixth when Garrett Hannum doubled a 1-1 pitch into center scoring Tate Johnson all the way from first with no outs.

Aidan Pennock drew a walk and Colton Engeman reached on a bunt to load the bases. After a strikeout, Landes Williams hit a sac fly to right scoring Hannum. Jason Thurman would then single to bring in Engeman and Pennock for a 5-2 lead. Vasin Thurman would fly out to center to end the inning.

Starter Landes Williams would settle in and hold the Panthers scoreless the rest of the way through six before giving way to Jason Thurman who came in a cleaned things up for the win.

Fort Madison would score three more in the top of the seventh highlighted by Kane Williams' 2-run single with two outs.

Reiburn Turnbull led the Hounds going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Landes Williams and Hannum both had a multiple hit game.

In the second game, Fort Madison blew things open with 12 runs in the top of the 2nd inning after Hannum spotted the Panthers a two-run lead on a 2-run single to Zerek Venghaus.

Johnson doubled to start things and stole third. Hannum and Pennock both drew walks to load the bases. Engeman drove in one on a squeeze with Johnson racing home to get the scoring started.

Kane Williams would walk in a run and Landes Williams would get hit by a pitch to force in what would be the game-winning run. But Fort Madison was just getting started.

Jason Thurman hit an RBI single and then Kane Williams would score on a wild pitch. After hitting through the lineup and leading 5-2, Engeman, Kane Williams, and Landes Williams would all hit singles to push the lead to 10-2. Jason and Vasin Thurman drew back-to-back walks scoring two more runs before a pitching change got Turnbull down on strikes to stop the onslaught.

Mt. Pleasant tried to get back in it in the bottom of the third chasing Hannum from the mound, but Jason Thurman came in with two outs and got a fly out to end the inning after surrendering a 2-run single.

The Hounds would add a run in the fourth and then three in the fifth to set a 10-run lead at 16-6. Thurman would give up a walk in the bottom half, but then got two fly outs to end the game.

Engeman was 2 of 4 with 2 RBI and three runs scored to lead Fort Madison in the nightcap. Jason Thurman was 2 of 3 in the win with 3 RBI and a run scored. Landes and Kane Williams both had two hits in the game.

Hannum went 2 2/3 giving up four hits and six runs, just two earned, on two strikeouts and three base on balls. Thurman finished up going 2 1/3 allowing two hits, no runs and fanning two.
