MT. PLEASANT - Fort Madison girls may be hitting the right stride at the right time.

The Lady Hounds slapped a double shutout on Mt. Pleasant Thursday night at the Mapleleaf Complex 14-0 and 12-0 to move to 11-14 on the year and get to .500 in Southeast Conference play at 7-7.

Freshman Lexi Whaley hit two home runs, one in each game to give her eight on the year. She's currently tied for 10th in Class 4A.

Fort Madison held both games to just 2 1/2 innings going up 14-0 after three in the first game. Rehm got the shutout in game one allowing just three base runners on two hits and walk in getting the win.

Kylee Cashman scored three runs and had 2 RBIs in the first game including a no-out triple in the top of the 1st scoring Emily Steffensmeier. Logan Johnson would pop out to third before Whaley crushed a liner over the left field fence for two runs.

Erika Kruse would then double and get moved over on Lauryn Helmick's fielder's choice. She would then steal home for another run to make it 5-0 after the opening frame.

With Rehm dealing in the circle, the Hounds would go on to score three more in the second inning and then six in the top of the third.

Allyson Helmick opened things with a triple to center and the Kylee Roen doubled, Emily Steffensmeier and Cashman singled all scoring a run. Rehm would follow with a single and Logan Johnson would get hit to load the bases.

Mt. Pleasant wanted nothing to do with Whaley up and the bases loaded and intentionally walked her giving up a run. Kruse would hit into a rare outfield fielders' choice on a hard grounder to right where courtesy runner Aija Jenkins was forced at second, but Taylor Johnson would score on the play.

Lauryn Helmick then got hit and Allyson Helmick would ground out, but scored Johnson before a strike out sent it to the bottom of the third, where Rehm gave up a one-out walk and a single before getting a strike out and pop out to end the game.

Lauryn Helmick was just two walks away from a perfect game in another 2 1/2 inning affair in the second game.

Helmick went three innings without allowing a hit while striking out four and walking two.

Whaley hit the first pitch she saw in the top of the second out to left field scoring three runs to give Fort Madison a 7-0 lead early. Kruse and Lauryn Helmick had back-to-back doubles in the inning to score another run. After walks were issued to McKenna Cashman and Jenkins, Steffensmeier doubled to center scoring both the runners for an 11-0 lead.

Kylee Cashman would the single to bring in Steffensmeier and set the 12-run rule, with Helmick getting the Lady Panthers without incident in the bottom of the third.

The Hounds travel to Northeast Community School District in Goose Lake for a Saturday tourney, and then head to Burlington on Monday for a doubleheader with the Grayhounds.

Two games with Fairfield on Tuesday, July 6 and a doubledip with Davenport West at Fort Madison wraps up the regular season.

The Hounds will take on the Southeast Conference front-runner Burlington again on Thursday, July 8 in the Class 4A Region 5 opener at BHS. Game time is 7 p.m.

Neeley Rehm is currently fourth in the conference play in hitting with a .452 batting average. Whaley is tops in homers with her eight and third in RBI with 31.
