FORT MADISON - Sophie Turner threw a complete-game shut out to lift Central Lee to a split in Friday Southeast Iowa Superconference softball action.

The Hawks downed Cardinal 4-0 in the second game after falling in a 2-1 affair to Van Buren in an earlier afternoon game.

In the opener, Meghan Hopp tripled with one on and one out in the first inning to score Jaci Hawk courtesy running for Macy Watkins. Hopp would move to third on back-to-back fielder's choices that recorded no outs. Then Abby Simmons would single to center bringing in Hopp. Two infield pop flies would leave the bases stranded.

Turner would give up a 2-out double in the bottom of the first, but retire the side on fly out. She would also give up a single and a walk with two outs in the second, but would get out of the inning on a grounder to second for a force out.

Both teams would then go scoreless until the top of the sixth. Hopp singled to open the frame. Shanna Buford would fly out to center for the first out. Makayla Morrison and Simmons would follow with singles to load the bases. Carlee Pezley then ripped a triple to right scoring Morrison and Simmons for the final runs of the game.

Hopp and Simmons each had two hits to lead Central Lee. Hopp, Morrison and Simmons all scored runs in the game. Pezley had two RBI, while Hopp and Simmons each had one. Turner gave up just three hits in the shutout and walked two with no strikeouts.

In the opener Central Lee got on the board first in the top of the 2nd. Buford opened the frame with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice when Morrison grounded to short. Simmons would follow with a ground out for the second out. Pezley then hit a sharp grounder through the middle to score Morrison before another grounder ended the top half.

Van Buren would answer when sophomore Ally Campbell launched a home run to center off Hopp. A couple of singles would put two more runners on, but a pickoff at third ending the inning on the base paths.

The Warriors would put the game-winning run across the plate on a sacrifice fly from Chelsey Huff that scored Bree Kirkhart on a tag from third.

Central Lee would get two runners on in the top of the sixth with two out, but Morrison's grounder back to the pitcher ended the threat.

The Lady Hawks would put another runner on in in the top of the seventh when Pezley reached on a error at short, but a couple grounders to Isabel Manning at third ended the game.

Buford was 2 of 3 on the night and Morrison had the only other hit for the Hawks. Hopp went two innings and gave up one run on four hits. Turner came on in the third in relief and surrendered three hits and a run, while fanning three.
