Keokuk group starts scholarship in Hurley's honor

KEOKUK - The Molly Hurley Memorial Scholarship committee is proud to announce they have established a scholarship fund in honor of the late Molly Hurley for in need area students planning to attend cosmetology school. The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Molly Hurley who passed away in August 2020.

On August 22, 2020 the tri-state area suffered a tragic loss of one of its prolific community members. The death of Warsaw’s Molly Hurley reverberated across the entire area and was felt by thousands. Molly was a 2002 graduate of Warsaw High School and went on to obtain her cosmetology license, working in local salons before achieving her dream of opening her own salon with “Vintage Vixen” and then “Maggie Lou’s” in 2015.

“She was so incredibly proud of Maggie Lou’s. She put her heart and soul into it, just as she did with everything she put her mind to accomplishing. She would be so incredibly proud and happy to be a part of helping others to achieve that dream”, said committee member Leah Jones.

No stranger to helping others and her community, Molly worked tirelessly on local community projects, such as working to restore local historic buildings, donations to fundraisers, and teaching young children to paint art projects at community events. Committee member Haylee Burnell wants the fund to follow Molly’s vision: “Helping someone follow their dream in her honor for the career she put her heart into feels like the right thing to do. Whether it be her clients, family or friends; she was the light that people needed”.

Several fundraising events have been scheduled and planned by the committee, involving the local community. Details and dates on those events are at the website below, with the first event taking place on July 24th, 2021 in Keokuk. Following events will take place in Warsaw IL, Meyer IL, and Montrose, IA.

The scholarship will be open to any Lee, Hancock, or Clark County high school graduate or individual 18 or older who has enrolled or will be enrolling in cosmetology school in 2022. Applications will be open on the website beginning on August 1st, 2021 with the application deadline being December 1st, 2021. Anyone interested in contributing to the Molly Hurley Memorial Scholarship Fund may do so by contacting the committee at info@mollyhurleymemorialscholarship.com or visiting the website at www.mollyhurleymemorialscholarship.com.
