KEOKUK - Fort Madison closed out the second game of a doubleheader with Keokuk in five innings behind the 4-RBI performance of freshman Kylee Roen.

Roen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in to help the Lady Hounds shut down the Chiefs before weather threatened to interrupt the doubleheader sweep 8-0, 14-2.

Fort Madison stands at 15-19 on the year and 9-11 in Southeast Conference play with the wins. Class 4A Region 5 quarterfinals get underway tonight in Burlington where the Bloodhounds will take on 20-13 BHS in a 7 p.m. start. The Grayhounds are 4-0 against Fort Madison this year, but three of the wins were by a combined five runs.

In the nightcap Wednesday, Fort Madison put up two runs in the top of the first when Aija Jenkins drew a lead-off walk and stole second. She then came around to score on Neeley Rehm's single with no outs. Rehm would get second on a wild pitch and steal third before scoring the second run on a fielder's choice.

Keokuk would answer with two in the bottom half off starter Erika Kruse. Roen would go to work in the bottom half with two on and no outs singling to right filed scoring Taylor Johnson. Jenkins would follow with single scoring Elle Ruble. Rehm would hold the pattern with another RBI single still with no outs to make it 5-2.

After a sacrifice fly out, Logan Johnson would get plunked and Kruse would draw a walk to load the bases. Lauryn Helmick would pop out in the infield, before Taylor Johnson doubled down the line to left scoring two to make it 8-2 Hounds.

Keokuk wouldn't get much else going aside from a bases loaded situation in the third, but Kruse coaxed a grounder to third to end the inning without allowing a run.

Fort Madison would add three more on a couple doubles from Jenkins and Lexi Whaley to take a 12-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Kruse would get the Chiefs 1-2-3 in the bottom half. Roen would score two more on a single to right and Kruse would retire the side in order for the win in the bottom half.

Kruse gave up just one hit against her former teammates and struck out two. Roen, Jenkins, Rehm, Whaley and Taylor Johnson all had multiple hit games for the Hounds.

In the opener, Rehm threw the shutout scattering just four hits and fanning three. She also went 3 of 5 at the plate with 3 RBI to lead Fort Madison offensively. Allyson Helmick went 2-of-4 with 3 RBI and Emily Steffensmeier was 4-of-4 in the lead-off spot.

The Hounds put up one run in the first and then piled on four in the top of the second for 5-0 lead. With two outs and two on in the second, Steffensmeier wore a pitch and the Kylee Cashman singled to center scoring Lauryn Helmick and loading the bases. Rehm followed with a single to center scoring Steffensmeier and McKenna Cashman.

Whaley would follow with a single to right scoring Kylee Cashman before a grounder ending the top half.

Rehm would put the Chiefs down in order and then Kruse and Lauryn Helmick opened the scoring in the third with back-to-back singles. After the first out, Allyson Helmick would single to left scoring both runners and giving Fort Madison a 7-0 lead before Keokuk got out of the jam.

Allyson Helmick would add another run in the top of the six to give Rehm a larger lead headed into the final two innings, but the sophomore would give up just one single the rest of the way to preserve the win.
