Laroy “Jack” Eugene Alford Mortimer, 88, of Keokuk, Iowa passed away surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, July 10, 2021. Jack was born in Alexandria, Missouri on February 16, 1933.  He was the son of Thomas Martin Alford and Violet May Davis Mortimer.  He married Nancy Ellen Clark in 1952. Nancy passed away during the birth of their child, Rebekah Mortimer of Ottumwa. Then, Jack married Sharon Jean Varner on October 11, 1953, and they had eight children together.

He had been employed at Dryden’s – Sheller Globe for thirty-five years until his retirement in 1995. Jack took great pride in being able to work, so he took a job at Hy-Vee that lasted over ten years. 

Jack enjoyed spending his free time bowling with friends and family, dancing wherever there was music, traveling out west on family vacations, and playing his favorite game, Bingo. Jack was also an active member of the Keokuk community, and was a member of the Elks Lodge #106, Moose Lodge #704, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters; first wife, Nancy and his second wife, Sharon; two children Penny Sue Hale, Sidney (Christine – she survives) Lewis Mortimer and one grandson; Nathaniel Mortimer.

He is survived by a brother Robert Dean Mortimer and a Sister, Peggy Conover of Alexandria, MO. 

His surviving children are Rebekah Mortimer of Ottumwa, IA; Larry (Carol) Mortimer of Keokuk, Marty (Rosey) Mortimer of Ainsworth, IA; Rick (Debbie) Mortimer of Donnellson, IA; John (Wendy) Mortimer of Sheboygan Falls, WI; Karen Dietrich of Concord, NC and Diana (Scott) Mead of Fletcher, NC.   One of his greatest joys was being a grandpa.  Here is the beginning of his legacy – Renea Glenn of Keokuk, who, along with her partner, Bubby Hauff, provided great support to her grandpa for many years; Mike (Crystal) Mortimer and Larry Jr. Mortimer; Kenneth Mortimer and Steven Mortimer; Gordon Rajaniemi and Katie Mortimer; Lance Mortimer and Dana (David) Zumdome; Jake (Kassie) Mortimer, Jack (Rissa) Mortimer, Bobbie Cloyed and Brooklyn Mortimer; Nicolas (Holly) Henkens, Kara (William) Parker, Tyler Prewitt and Lexi Gossage; Delanie (Jordan) Daugherty.  There are numerous great-grandchildren as well. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk.  Jack will be laid to rest at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Summitville, Iowa. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday directly before the service.
