WEST POINT - After the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 Sweet Corn Festival, corn eaters swamped the square in West Point as the 68th Annual event kicked off Wednesday night.

With the carnival back in full swing, and four-man volunteer crews hauling 40 lb baskets of hot buttered sweet corn out of boilers on the park's north side, the Sweet Corn Princess and Queen coronations got underway just before the skies dumped a bit more rain on southeast Iowa.

A packed grandstand area watched 5-year-old Emma Wilkens of West Point win this year's Sweet Corn Festival Princess crown out of a field of 12. Wilkens is the daughter of Jordan and Jenny Wilkens of West Point.

Kayla Box, of West Point, was named the 2021 Sweet Corn Festival Queen and Olivia Tennant was named 1st Runner-up.

The Iowa Pork Producers sponsored a BBQ Pork Loin dinner to a packed park shelter house as the Holy Trinity Dance team put on a performance on the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Main Stage in front of the West Point Library.

Things get underway again on Friday with the carnival and free sweet corn starting at 5 p.m., along with arts and crafts available in the park.

BBQ chicken dinners will be served from 5 to 10 p.m. or "until we run out." An open invitation Sweet Corn eating contest will kick off the evening starting right at 5 p.m. on the stage and is open to all ages.

Raeanne's School of Dance and Paulette's Dance Studio will entertain the audience in front of the Pilot Grove Savings Bank stage after the sweet corn eating contest. Then Andy and the Decades will perform from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
