Roger Lloyd Martin, 64, of Montrose, IA, died Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

He was born on December 5, 1956 on a United States Air Force Base in Guam, the son of LaVerne Lloyd and Marilyn Jane Hawk Martin.

At the age of 40, Roger continued his education at Indian Hills Community College and received his Associates Degree in Drafting.

In his younger years, Roger had been employed at Dick Hamilton’s Standard Station in Chariton, IA where he began with pushing a broom and working his way up to auto mechanic.  Over the years he had worked as a baker, bartender and truck driver.  Most recently he had been employed at Barker’s Cabinets in Keosauqua, IA as a computer aided draftsman.

He was a member of The Antique Outboard Association and the Antique and Classic Boat Society.

Roger loved vintage and antique boats and had an extensive collection of vintage and antique outboard motors.  He enjoyed motorcycles and cars and listening to music, especially country.   He also enjoyed traveling and had traveled many miles throughout the United States in his camper van. As a child, he traveled from Guam to the United States on a ship and received a certificate for crossing the equator.  Growing up in a military family, Roger had to learn to make friends easily due to his father’s transfers and as an adult he never knew a stranger.    Roger had a great sense of humor and was quite the prankster.

He is survived by his significant other of twelve years, Marla Shafer of Montrose, one brother, Brian Martin of Montrose, one sister, Kelly Jo Martin of Des Moines, IA, several nieces and nephews, one uncle, Jimmie Ray “Chicken Hawk” Hawk, several cousins and a host of friends.  He is also survived by his faithful companion, Ruby Jean – The Boston Terrier.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday (Sept 18) at the Vigen Memorial Home in Montrose with Pastor Dave Barrett officiating.

Visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday, from 1 – 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the family meeting with friends at that time.
