Bernice E. McCarty, 94, of Keokuk, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at her home in Keokuk.

Bernice was born on Jan 23, 1927, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur L. and Marie E. (Murphy) Jones. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School, and in 1953, she was united in marriage to Charles R. McCarty in Carthage. They renewed their vows at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in 1962. He preceded her in death in 1993.

Bernice worked several jobs in the area, most recently working in home health care. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Ladies of Charity. She was an avid cook and baker, creating delicious food and treats for her whole family, whom she loved deeply.

Bernice is survived by four children: Debora (Rick) Jinkens of Wayland, Missouri; Robert (Renee) McCarty of Keokuk, Iowa; Lonnie McCarty of Keokuk; and Larry (Eveline) McCarty of Camas, Washington; a niece that was like a daughter: Teresa (Dennis) Roberts; her daughter-in-law Mary McCarty of Fort Madison, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren: Alycia (Brent) Cavanias, Justin (Samantha) Swinderman, Chrissy (Matt) Englund, Meagan Walton, Josh Swinderman, Shannon (Tasha) Jinkens, Ricky (Nisha) Jinkens, Tim McCarty, Whitney McCarty, Tyler McCarty, Danielle (Joe) Hambleton, Samantha McCarty, Dillan McCarty, Sean McCarty, Chloe McCarty, Michael McCarty, Katie Kanellopoulos and Judy Roberts; thirty-two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

 Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, her son Dick McCarty of Keokuk; her brother Lonnie Jones, her sister Marie Tallman; three grandchildren: Tony McCarty, Amy Swinderman and Lonnie McCarty, Jr.; a great-grandson; and her niece Judith Van Zant.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk, with burial to follow at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 7 pm, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 pm at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk. A Christian Vigil Service will be held on Monday at 7 pm directly following the visitation.
