IGHSAU splits up No. 1 Nikes and No. 5 Crusaders in regional play

Fort Madison draws Solon on the road to open post-season play in Class 4A

FORT MADISON - The Class 1A No. 5 Crusaders got an anticipated first-round bye and will get a chance to play its first two matches at home as they were slotted as the top-seed in Region 8 play starting Monday, Oct. 18.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released brackets Thursday afternoon and Holy Trinity Catholic gets Monday off and will play the winner of the Seymour v. Moulton-Udell on Wednesday Oct. 20 at Shottenkirk Gymnasium.

If the Crusaders advance in the second round they would again host the regional semis on Monday, Oct. 25. They would face the winner of the New London v. Moravia/WACO v. Keota sub-bracket.

The regional finals would be played Wednesday, Oct. 28 at a site yet to be determined.

Also in the region is Lamoni, who just dropped out of the top 15 in Class 1A this week. Other teams include: Wayne, Murray, Mt. Ayr, Southeast Warren, East Union, Diagonal, and Mormon Trail.

Fort Madison High School will play in the Class 4A Region 8 bracket. The Hounds travel all the way to Solon on Tuesday Oct. 19. With a win there, the Bloodhounds would face Central DeWitt, who got the bottom half bye in the bracket, on Thursday, Oct. 21. The regional final would be played TBD on Oct. 26.

Other teams in the bracket include Burlington and Keokuk, who play to face Class 4A No. 2 North Scott on Thursday.

Burlington Notre Dame drew the top seed in Region 7 in Class 1A. They will face the same bracket structure as Holy Trinity, with their first match against the winner of Lone Tree v. English Valleys on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Nikes would host the second round and the semis with the regional finals to be announced.

Other teams in the Nikes bracket include Wapello, Morningstar Academy, Winfield-Mt. Union, Highland, Easton Valley, Maquoketa Valley, Calamus-Wheatland, Cedar Valley Christian, Central City, Midland, Prince of Peace, Marquette Catholic.
