Joseph “Joe” Patrick Matheney, 80, of Keokuk, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Keokuk.

Joe was born on April 18, 1941, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Charles and Carmileta (Selby) Matheney. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1959, later attending Southeastern Community College. In 1963, he was united in marriage to Julia “Julie” Wood at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keokuk. She survives. 

Joe owned and operated his own employment agency in Memphis, Tennessee, for forty years, retiring to Keokuk in the early 2000’s. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk. Joe enjoyed spending his free time deer hunting, doing yardwork, boating, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Hawkeyes. Most importantly, he loved spending quality time with his family, hunting with his sons and attending sports games. Joe was an All-State basketball player in high school and also played in college.

Joe is survived by his with Julie Matheney of Keokuk; three children: Michael (Amy) Matheney of Memphis, Tennessee, Christine (Mike) Ciesla of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Tim (Cindy) Matheney of Frisco, Texas; seven grandchildren: Colin, Scott, Zach, Amanda, Ashton, Dale (Caroline) and Julia Matheney; his great-grandson Tripp; and his sister Camileta Matheney of St. Louis, Missouri. 

Joe’s life will be celebrated with a private graveside service at Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk.
