Barr Memorial Chapel obituary – Carol Jean Houston, 69, Fort Madison

Carol Jean Houston, 69 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died 10:44 am Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa.  She was born June 23, 1952 in Fort Madison, a daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Johnson) Knowles.  On November 17, 1973, she married Gerald Houston in Fort Madison. 

Carol was 1970 graduate of Fort Madison High School.  She worked at Valley Clinic and later at the River Cities Ophthalmology as a receptionist for 18 years.  She enjoyed crafting, working with her flowers, gardening, and cooking.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.  Carol wants you to remember her with this quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder: "Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I will remember you all.  If you can only remember me with tears, then don't remember me at all."

She is survived by two sons, Keith Houston of Janesville, Wisconsin and Kurt Houston of Denmark, Iowa; one brother, Robert (Glenda) Knowles of Fort Madison; and six grandchildren: Lydia and Madeleine Houston; Hunter, Jaida, Bella, and Kaiden Houston.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Per her wishes, her body has been cremated.  Her family will greet friends from 4:00 - 6:00 pm Friday, October 29, 2021 at the Barr Memorial Chapel.  Graveside services and burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, with Pastor Les Featheringill officiating. A memorial has been established for the Susan G.
