Juvenile arrested in Wednesday murder

FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Police Department is reporting the arrest of 17-year-old Dimari D. J. Meredith of Fort Madison in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy Wednesday in Fort Madison.

Meredith is being charged with 1st degree murder and is being held at the Southeast Iowa Juvenile Detention Center.

According to a release from Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff, Meredith was detained and questioned at the scene and was taken into custody. He was then transferred to the detention center to wait an arraignment.

A search warrant was obtained and a weapon was discovered at Meredith's home along with other items that were taken into evidence.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations is also assisting with the investigation.

Meredith is arrested on a suspicion of the charge, and is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The shooting is the second murder in Fort Madison in the past four weeks. A Keokuk man was stabbed to death in an apartment hallway in the 600 block of 8th Street in Fort Madison.

The victim's name has not yet been released by police.

Rohloff said the two incidents are completely isolated and unrelated.
