Garza gets five years for role in February shooting

FORT MADISON - A 35-year-old Burlington man will go to prison for up to five years for his role in a shooting that took place in downtown Fort Madison, Feb. 7.

According to Lee County Attorney Ross Braden, Roy Michael Garza Jr., was sentenced to an indeterminate five-year prison sentence for his involvement in the shooting which occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 7, in the 800 block of Avenue G.

Garza pleaded guilty to Going Armed with Intent, a Class D Felony on Sept. 9 for his involvement in the incident.

Garza was the passenger of the vehicle involved in the shooting and was alleged to have discharged his firearm with multiple shots being fired in the direction of Tommy Ross, also of Burlington. Garza admitted in open court as to going armed with the firearm with the intent to use it against Ross.

He was also assessed restitution for the damage done to several local businesses downtown. No one were injured as a result of the shooting.

The Fort Madison Police Department was the responding and investigating agency and the matter was prosecuted by the Lee County Attorney’s Office
