Relay for Life efforts link cancer fight, discount shopping

FORT MADISON - The Relay for Life of North Lee County has taken on a new form this year.  While the focus remains the same to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, the 2021 event is a Shopping for Hope event. The fundraising event is geared around the selling of cloth shopping bags that contain a punch card for discounts at local businesses in North Lee County.  The cost of the bag and the punch card is $20.

Twenty-eight businesses participated by providing discounts or free items for the punch card. Corporate sponsors also stepped up to help make this event a success and are listed on the cloth shopping bags.

The punch card has a limited lifespan with the discounts/deals only good from November 5-26 (unless otherwise noted on the card).  This allows shoppers to take advantage of the deals before the holiday rush.  Bags can be purchased from Group Benefit Partners, located at 914 Avenue G in Fort Madison, during normal working hours, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. now until Wednesday, November 24th.

Along with the selling of the bags and punch cards, luminarias can also be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one who has suffered from cancer.  These are $5 each and forms are available at Group Benefit Partners or on the Relay for Life Facebook page.  Purchased luminarias will be displayed in Central Park on Friday, November 26th during the annual Lighted Parade in downtown Fort Madison.

All monies raised from the sale of bags and punch cards, and luminarias will go to support the work of the American Cancer Society.
