Vernon Franklin Nixon, 68, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at his daughter’s home near Lomax, Illinois.
Vernon was born on May 17, 1953 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Harlan and Darlene (Miller) Nixon. He married Peggy Hobby on April 15, 1973 at the Lomax Christian Church.
Vernon attended Dallas City High School before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his military service he began working at J.I. Case in Burlington, Iowa, where he retired after 30 years. Vernon was known for his ornery nature and enjoyed pulling pranks on his friends and family. In his younger years he enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, and attending Fighting Illini sporting events. He was a member of the Lomax Christian Church, Lomax Haunted House Boys, and was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Survivors include his wife: Peggy; two daughters: Heidi (Mike) Ruebush of Lomax and Angela McConnell of Biggsville, Illinois; four grandchildren: Jalen (Zach) Smith, Layton Tallman, Brayden McConnell and Keaton Ruebush and one great-granddaughter: Karsyn Smith. Also surviving are four siblings: Debra (Larry) Walker of Lomax, Illinois; Susan (Dave) Smith of Hamilton, Illinois; Vance Nixon of St. Charles, Missouri; and Vince (Beverly) Nixon of Ainsworth, Iowa and his special dog: Daisy. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to Banks & Beals Funeral Home.
A graveside service with Military Rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 26, 2021at Crane Cemetery, near Lomax. Maxine Dennison will officiate. No visitation is planned. Banks & Beals Funeral in Stronghurst is assisting the family.
