WEST POINT - A little holiday season seasoning will be going on Friday on the square in West Point.

The West Point Community Club's annual Wine & Beer Walk will be taking place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the square with 10 vendors sharing local spirits, while a different kind of spirit will be taking place at the American Legion Hall.

The Club this year is creating a Hat-and-Mitten Tree where donated gloves and hats will be collected and provided to schools in Lee County. There will also be a Christmas toy drive and anyone bringing in donations for either program this week after 4 p.m. to the Legion Hall will get free raffle tickets for a gift basket raffle.

Nikki Fraise, president of West Point Community Club said the gift baskets were added this year to take the place of the Christmas Tree contest the group has held in the past.

Donated toys for the toy drive, and hats and mittens for the donation tree can be dropped off at the American Legion Hall on the east side of the square.

"We did the trees before and all the businesses in town decorated a tree and then the people could donate to their favorite tree," Fraise said. "But this year we decided it takes a lot of our time and business owners don't always have that much free time, but we wanted to keep fundraising.

"So this year the committee created the baskets with donations from local businesses. We were looking for something that would help raise funds for other projects."

The club provides funding to many city programs including reading programs the library as well as supplying Christmas decorations in the town square park.

"We're also doing a project where all the parks in West Point need changing tables in the restrooms so we're working on that as well," she said.

Raffle tickets will be sold to participants who can then use the raffle tickets on their favorite basket from the all the baskets offered. Funds raised with the raffle tickets will go toward the Pollmiller Park trail renovation project that is currently in the works with the Lee County Conservation District.

Plans are underway to put a new concrete surface on the trail through the park with an estimated cost of $450,000.

In addition to the 10 vendors for wine and beer, Kim's Confections will also be open for hot chocolate with live music and holiday treats.

Commemorative glasses for the wine walk are on sale now at Sonny's Supermarket, West Point City Hall, Corner Tap, and the 4th Street Bar.

Parking will be available around the square and side streets are available. There will also be a trolley that will be taking residents to the other businesses not on the square including Brad's Pad and Bentler Auto. Having a designated driver is strongly encouraged.
