WEST BURLINGTON - The Central Lee Lady Hawks nice start to the year was interrupted as West Burlington, a state tournament participant in 2020, rolled to a 52-33 win Friday night in Southeast Iowa Superconference girls basketball action.

Makayla Morrison led Central Lee with nine points, followed by Alivia Myhre and Macy Watkins with eight apiece. Mya Lampe had seven points and Maura Watkins added a point.

The Hawks got behind early, trailing 14-6 after the first quarter on some cool shooting from the perimeter.

Morrison and Lampe combined for three 3-pointers, but the Hawks went just 3 of 28 from beyond the arc on the night. They were just 10 of 47 from the floor overall.

"We couldn't throw the ball into the ocean. We had some good looks and the girls kept shooting, but we just couldn't get hot," head coach Jay Baldwin said.

"In years past, Mya (Merschman) would have been able to carry us and obviously we don't have her to look to. In those types of games, she would have put the team on her back and carried them."

West Burlington pushed the lead to 24-13 at the end of the first half and then outscored the Lady Hawks 28-20 in the second half to put the game out of reach. The Falcons' McKenna Marlow led all scorers with 19 points followed by Logan Kelly with 15 and Abby Bence with 11.

Central Lee falls to 2-1 on the year after opening the season with two SEISC wins over Cardinal and Van Buren.

The Hawks face some tough SEISC competition next week when Danville (1-1) comes to Central Lee High School on Tuesday, before Winfield-Mt. Union (4-0) comes to town on Friday.
