WEST BURLINGTON - Central Lee's boys basketball team is still learning the system of first-year head coach Kritter Hayes.

The Hawks were pushed around by West Burlington in a 67-31 loss in Southeast Iowa Superconference action Friday night in West Burlington.

West Burlington opened up a quick 13-9 first quarter lead and that included a 5-0 run by the Hawks to wrap up the quarter. But West Burlington would hold Central Lee to just five points the rest of the first half while ripping off 25 points in the second quarter for a comfortable 38-14 first half lead.

The Falcons held Central Lee to just four points in the third quarter to pull away for the win.

Head Coach Kritter Hayes said the Hawks lacked confidence in handling the ball and West Burlington's press.

"They were able to move the ball around like we had no defense out there at all," Hayes said. "We just really struggled to handle the ball tonight. We were loose with it and made very poor decisions in our ball movement."

The Hawks failed to get a player in double figures on the night. Alex Sandoval and Brayden Wyrick each had eight points in the loss. Corbin Pohren, Cory Jones, and Dante Merschman all had three points. Aden Ross, Bryce Finney and Maddox Doty all chipped in with two points apiece.

Hayes said the Hawks have lots to work on, but every game "is a redemption day" for the boys.

"We have tons to work on. WB was just way better than us tonight. They were stronger with the ball and were much more physical than our team. Our players are going to have to outwork everyone else and do it without being pushed around," he said.

"Their points off our turnovers had to have been at least 30," Hayes said.

The Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season and travel to Davis County on Saturday night before hosting Danville Tuesday night.
