DONNELLSON - Central Lee's boys basketball team is still looking for its first win of the year, and Danville had no plans of giving it to them on Tuesday night.

Senior swingman Drake Johnson threw down 21 points, including 12 in the first half, as the Bears rolled to a 75-43 win over the Hawks in Southeast Iowa Superconference action in Donnellson.

A bright spot for the Hawks this year has been the play of 6'-3" freshman Brayden Wyrick. Wyrick has 59 points on the year and led Central Lee with 17 points Tuesday night.

Wyrick scored all 17 in the first half, but an adjustment by Danville held Wyrick scoreless in the second half. He was 7-of-9 from the freethrow line working the paint in the Hawks' post position in the first two periods.

Danville jumped out to a 10-2 lead just three minutes into the first quarter, but Central Lee stayed with them the rest of the period. Danville then put together an 11-2 run midway through the second period to stake a 48-23 lead at the half.

"Our guys couldn't overcome the height and length of Danville on the boards and their great shooting. We battled and worked hard to execute our game plan and did well at times throughout this game," Head Coach Kritter Hayes said.

"We know we are going to have to out-work our opponents and do all the little things when it comes to defending and rebounding. We have moments, but struggle to sustain those efforts during the game. We talked about how hard it is to have to always be fighting from behind. Our team will learn from these experiences and just continue to look forward."

The third period put the game out of reach when Danville outscored the Hawks 21-8 to have a 33-point lead heading into the final period when scoring went cool as both teams worked their benches.

Alex Sandoval had eight for Central Lee, while six other players got into the scoring action. Aden Ross had five, Corbin Pohren scored four on the night. Chase Johnson and Dante Merschman had three points apiece, Bryce Finney added two and Cory Jones converted a freethrow in the second half to round out Central Lee's scoring.

Caden Gourley, a 6'-5" sophomore, had 14 points for the Bears and Ty Carr added 12.

Central falls to 0-4 on the year and is off until Tuesday when they travel to 1-2 Burlington Notre Dame. The Hawks then host Holy Trinity in a cross-county rivalry matchup Friday night.
