Rudd takes 2nd; Wiseman, Smith 3rd at FM Invite

McGowan 4th at 195 lbs; Hounds take 5th in team scoring

FORT MADISON - The crowd was back at the annual Fort Madison Invitational wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.

It may seem like the backdrop to some top-three finishes for Bloodhound wrestlers, but the pandemic put a headlock of the event last year and it was good to see the Hound Dome and the MPR packed again to watch as sophomore Landon Rudd grabbed a runner-up finish at 195 lbs from his spot on the Fort Madison jayvee team

Senior Gavin Wiseman and sophomore Teague Smith took third place for the Fort Madison varsity squad in the 152 and 160 lb brackets.

Rudd came out of the D pool on Friday night as the top seed in the pool. He then scored two pins - one over Columbus' Ethan Palmer at 2:41 and then scored a pin over Muscatine's Michael Cavieazel in the first period to advance to the title match with Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Colin Flannagan.

Flannagan had control of the match early taking a 13-0 lead in the second period before recording the fall at 24 seconds into the final period.

Fort Madison took fifth place in team scoring out of 21 teams with 316 points - 22 points out of the top four. Dubuque Hempstead was fourth with 338.5 and Ottumwa won the Invitational with 393.5 points.

Wiseman took third at 152 after falling to eventual champion Isaiah Fenton of West Burlington/Notre Dame. The senior went 3-0 in pool wrestling Friday night, and won his first round match in the bracket wrestling Saturday over Fort Madison's Austin Miller by fall in the second period.

Fenton led 4-1 after the first period, but Wiseman said he got a little aggressive in the second period.

"I tried a move that was probably not smart and he was able to take advantage of it, but I was wrestling with him til then," Wiseman said.

The senior said he will probably finish the year wrestling at 152 after wrestling at 160 lbs up until this weekend..

Smith lost in pool action Friday to Mackinaw's Gage Sweckard in a 9-5 decision. That pitted him against Washington's Chase Greiner to start gold bracket play on Saturday. Smith recorded a pin at 2:33 putting him into the semis against New London's Dominic Lopez (21-0).

Lopez, who has a history of racking up points scoring take downs and allowing escapes recorded 12 take downs and Smith got a point for escaping each one until Lopez racked up enough points for the technical fall in the second period.. Lopez also scored a reversal at the second period start.

Smith wasn't dejected with the loss citing Lopez' 3rd place finish in the Class 1A tournament last year at 145.

"He's a really good wrestler. He went to state last year so I knew that would be a tough match," Smith said.

Senior Jakob McGowan suffered a pin on a quick slap in the second round of his third place match to earn fourth place overall at 182 lbs. McGowan scored a take down 24 seconds into the second period to tie that match up with Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Alex Koch. Koch had gotten the best of McGowan in pool wrestling with a 9-4 decision.

McGowan made a move and got Koch to the ground, but Koch was able to wrestle out of the move and then turned it to for takedown and had McGowan on his back momentarily, enough to draw the whistle.

Miller wrestled back to earn 5th place at 152 lbs. for the Fort Madison jayvee squad. Ike Thacher also earned a 5th place medal at 195 lbs.

The Fort Madison jayvee squad finished 16th at the tourney.

The top five wrestlers earn medals at the meet.
