Genevieve Marie Lewis, 98, of Niota, Illinois, passed away at 12:40 a.m. on December 19, 2021, in Keokuk, Iowa. She was born in the Nauvoo Township, August 3, 1923, daughter of Joseph Franklin and Agatha (Wellner) Pilkington. She married Morgan William Lewis on June 25, 1946 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. He preceded her in death October 13, 1999.

Survivors include four children, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; Ruth Ann Lewis of Springfield, Illinois, Robert (Karen) Lewis of Aledo, Illinois and their daughter Julie (Jason) Sutherland of Vancouver, B.C., Canada and their daughters Elizabeth and Catherine; Morgan “Bud” (Mary) Lewis of Knoxville, Illinois, and their three children Erin (Shawn) Maurer of Bloomington, Illinois, and their son Adam and daughter Kate; Alison (Jason) Merrill of Quincy, Illinois and daughters Gemma and Stella; Amanda (Mike) Aviles and daughters Izabella and Ana, also of Bloomington; and Marilyn Lewis of Seattle, Washington.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother Joseph Pilkington and his wife May.

Genevieve was a 1941 graduate from Saints Peter and Paul High School in Nauvoo, this was the last post-graduate of Saints Peter and Paul High School. She was a 1942 graduate of the Business Program. She then graduated in 1945 as a Registered Nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Iowa. Genevieve worked as an registered nurse in private duty nursing, an intensive care nurse, medical-surgical department for nine years at Carthage Memorial Hospital and an industrial nurse at Fruehauf Corporation from 1973 to 1984.

Genevieve was a member of the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Mothers Club, Catholic Women’s Club, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, the Red Cross, Sonora Household Science, and several other organizations. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family; the Nauvoo Grape Festival Pageant and Parade with the family participating in these events and dancing at the Moose Club.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at Ss. Peater and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo with Father Szydlik officiating. 

Burial will in the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Nauvoo.

A memorial has been established in her memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Nauvoo, Illinois.
