Police release details on Friday armed burglary

FORT MADISON - An 18-year-old Argyle man and 17-year-old juvenile from Fort Madison are in custody following an armed burglary that took place in the 1900 block of Avenue F Friday afternoon.

According to reports, at 3:17 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1900 block Avenue F for a burglary-in-progress call. Reportedly the victim had returned to his residence and surprised the suspects in the act of looting his home.

A struggle ensued after one of the perpetrators produced a handgun. The suspect was successfully disarmed
by the homeowner, and fled the scene with his accomplices. The victim sustained a minor injury and was later treated at the hospital and released.

The principal suspects, as well as additional involved juveniles, were located shortly afterward in the area of burglary.

Charged at the time were Hunter J. West, age 18, of Argyle. West was charged with burglary in the 1st Degree, and Assault While Participating in a Felony. He was also arrested on a charge from Keokuk Police on Participating in a Riot. West was taken to Lee County Jail pending arraignment.

A 17-year old male Fort Madison resident, was also taken in custody and charged with burglary in the 2nd Degree, and an outstanding warrant for Willful Injury on an assault incident from November 21st, 2021. He was confined at the Juvenile Detention Center.

All the stolen property was recovered, to include firearms, sporting goods, and a safe.

The investigation continues with additional charges contemplated. The Fort Madison Police were assisted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and citizens that provided numerous reports of sightings of the suspects.

The public is reminded that charges are only an accusation of a criminal offense. All subjects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
