Designated drivers are the MVP

FORT MADISON – Americans love a good party, and Super Bowl LVI is one of the most anticipated.  Super bowl LVI is on Sunday, February 13, 2022.  To keep drivers and partygoers safe on the roads, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is teaming with the Fort Madison Police Department to remind football fans everywhere the Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.  Whether you’re heading out to a restaurant or a Super bowl party, if your night involves drinking alcohol, make sure you plan for a designated driver to drive you home safely at the night’s end.

If you are planning to be away from home during Super Bowl, make sure to find a designated driver if you need one.  If you are hosting a party, make sure you take care of your designated drivers.  Make sure your designated driver is sober.

If you are the designated driver, remember that you are the MVP of the night.  People are relying on you, so enjoy the game, food and nonalcoholic drinks.

If someone has been drinking and tries to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely, even if they make a fuss.  They will thank you later.

Whether you are attending a party or going to a bar or restaurant, make a game plan and follow these simple tips for a safe and happy evening:

  • Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive, even if you have only one drink.
  • Call a taxi for a ride, if necessary
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact the Fort Madison Police Department.
  • If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
