Hancock sheriff investigating Sunday death

CARTHAGE - A 27-year-old Carthage man was found dead outside Carthage city limits Sunday, but no foul play is suspected based on a preliminary investigation.

Hancock County Sheriff Travis Duffy reported that on Sunday, February 6, at approximately 1:25 p.m., deputies were called to a report of the male being found deceased near the city.

Carthage Police had taken a missing persons report earlier in the day around 9:20 a.m. The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a body confirmed as Darren K. McGrew, 27, of Carthage, McGrew had been reported missing and was identified as the deceased male.

Preliminary results of the investigation show that McGrew died due to extended exposure to cold weather. Duffy said there was no indication of trauma or illness, or any indication of foul play.

McGrew had been last seen on foot in the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 4

The death is currently under investigation by the Hancock County Sheriffs Office, Carthage Police Department, and the Illinois State Police.

At this time Sheriff Duffy wants the public to be assured that there is no risk to public safety in regard to this incident.
