Hamilton man arrested for attempted murder

72-year-old allegedly threatens to shoot residents at Hamilton residence

HAMILTON - At approximately 12:37 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022, the Hamilton Police Department was dispatched to the 300 block of N. 7th Street for a report of a man at a residence with a gun.

An initial report indicated that the gun had been fired in the house and that the suspect, James F. Carel (72) of Hamilton, had threatened to shoot people at the residence. Evidence on scene confirmed the gun had been fired, according to a release from the Hamilton Police Department.

Carel was able to be disarmed by an occupant and subdued until law enforcement officers arrived. He
was taken into custody and was transported to the Hancock County Jail where he awaits court
proceedings.

The case is currently being investigated by the Hamilton Police Department.
Carel has been charged with the following offenses: Attempted First Degree Murder, Class X Felony; Home Invasion, Class X Felony; Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, Class 1 Felony; Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Class 4 Felony.
Carel’s bond has been set at $3 million.

All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Hamilton Police Department was assisted by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Carthage Police Department, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Reserve.
