CLIVE — A southeast Iowa woman scratched off a lottery ticket with her morning coffee and won a $10,000 prize.

Laura McBride, 58, of Wever, won the big prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “$100,000 Mega Crossword” scratch game. She bought the lucky ticket at Hy-Vee, 3140 Agency St. in Burlington, and scratched it the next morning.

“I’m looking at it and I’m like, ‘Oh, my goodness!’ I kind of kept going over it probably a whole bunch of times before I finally contacted my husband because I was just in disbelief,” she told officials on Friday as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s Cedar Rapids regional office.

McBride called her husband, Mark, who came home from work to look at the ticket. He scanned it with the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app, which confirmed the big win.

“He was looking at it, he scanned it and then his mouth dropped and that’s when I knew, ‘This is for real! I really did win!’” McBride recalled with a laugh.

McBride, a retired nurse, said she and her husband plan to put some of their winnings toward an upcoming vacation to Montana.

“This just kind of helped make the trip more exciting,” she said.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword is a $10 scratch game that features overall odds of 1 in 3.30 and 38 top prizes of $100,000. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit ialottery.com.
