75-year-old man suffocates while trying to clear an auger blockage

HANCOCK COUNTY - A 75-year-old Basco man was found dead in a grain bin in Sutter, shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

At 12:34 p.m. Hamilton and Warsaw Fire Departments were dispatched by Hancock/Henderson County 911 for a report of a person trapped in a grain bin in the 1000 block of E. County Road 650 in Sutter.

Upon arrival at the scene emergency personnel were met by farmers and family of the victim who said Calvin Baumann, 75 was trapped in the bin.

"We were advised that he had been in the bin trying to clear a blockage in the bin's unloading auger," Warsaw Rural Fire Protection District Fire Chief Steve Siegrist wrote in a a release of the incident.

Fire personnel cut relief holes in the sides of the bin and began removing grain with the help of farmers, deputies, and EMS staff. After removing a substantial amount of grain, Baumann was found and couldn't be resuscitated.

Hancock County Coroner Kendall Beals was contacted and responded the scene and pronounced Baumann dead.

"Condolences of the emergency responders to out to the family and friends of Mr. Baumann," Siegrist wrote in the release Wednesday afternoon.
