ISP K9 teams place at Spencer certifications

FORT MADISON – The Iowa DOC K9 Department certifies through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) each year.   This year’s certification was held in Spencer, Iowa on March 27th – 29th 2022.  More than 60 teams attended from Iowa and Minnesota and each team needed to certify in two categories: vehicle searches and room searches.

The Iowa State Penitentiary team consisted of Sergeants Steve Dill, Dustin Yager, and Mike Barnes.  Two K9 Teams from Clarinda Correctional Facility (CCF) joined them. Jason Gibson with K9 Hugo and Damian Barnett with K9 Bane.   

The Iowa Department of Corrections placed very well with individuals and teams taking home trophies.  Clarinda Correctional Facility Sergeant Damian Barnett with K9 Bane received second place overall, and for the Top Rookie Dog competing against 16 other K9 teams.  ISP Sergeants Mike Barnes with K9 Justice received 4th place overall, with 1st place in rooms, and second place on vehicles.   ISP Sergeant Dustin Yager with K9 Maverick received 8th place overall.  ISP Sergeant Steven Dill with K9 Rosco was awarded 2nd-place room search. Finally, CCF Sergeant Jason Gibson with K9 Hugo took 3rd place in room search.

Iowa Department of Corrections represented very well in overall team placements.

The USPC judges take the score of each participant and create a combined overall score to determine team placements. 

First Place team:
Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility Sergeant Asa Beauchamp with K9 Cash; Fort Dodge Correctional Facility Sergeant Jamie Weitzel with K9 Otto; Fort Dodge Correctional Facility Sergeant Wade Hammen with K9 Tank; and Anamosa State Penitentiary Damon Van Bogart with K9 Karma
Third Place team:
Clarinda Correctional Facility Sergeant Jason Gibson with K9 Hugo; Clarinda Correctional Facility Sergeant Damian Barnett with K9 Bane; Iowa State Penitentiary Sergeant Steve Dill with K9 Rosco; Iowa State Penitentiary Sergeant Dustin Yager with K9 Maverick; Iowa State Penitentiary Sergeant Mike Barnes with K9 Justice

The Team trains regularly with their K9’s in each of these areas to ensure they are ready for their day-to-day work in the facility.
