BURLINGTON — The second half was better than the first, but that wasn’t enough for Fort Madison’s girls soccer team in Monday’s 2-0 loss to Burlington High School at Bracewell Stadium.
The Bloodhounds (3-2 overall, 3-1 Southeast Conference) fell out of a first-place tie with the Grayhounds (4-0, 3-0), who scored both of their goals in the first half.
“They’re a good team. I knew coming in it would be a close game,” said Fort Madison coach Carrie Burken. “I was pleased with how we played in the second half. We just need to start that way.”
Josephine Blazic scored the first goal for the Grayhounds seven minutes into the match with a deep shot from the left side. Kevynn Siefken’s goal with 9:14 to play in the half provided the final margin.
From that point, neither team had much offense, although Fort Madison had three chances to score in the second half. Alana Simpson, Teagan Snaadt and Natalie Randolph each had shots on goal, but couldn’t convert.
“The second half was much better,” Burken said. “Overall, I was actually pleased with the second half. We had a lot more possessions, possessing the ball and communicating. We just couldn’t convert.
“Aside from their two goals, they didn’t have too many offensive opportunities. I think they were an experienced team that took advantage of those opportunities. They have good chemistry — you can tell they work well together and have a lot of soccer knowledge.”
It was the first time this season the Bloodhounds had played on artificial turf.
“Playing on turf is very different than playing on grass,” Burken said. “It’s a very different speed of play. It’s a lot harder to control the ball, and turf isn’t as forgiving as grass is.
“They understand well about playing on turf. Their keeper knows how to come out and get balls that are long. They have some quick players defensively, and they knew what to do against our quicker players.”
Fort Madison plays at Mount Pleasant on Thursday night.
