New London woman dies after Friday accident

LEE COUNTY – The Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle accident near Highway 2 and West Point Road Friday at 5:11 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies observed a GMC Arcadia stuck in a fence in a field northwest of the intersection with an unresponsive female driver behind the wheel.

After further investigation, the driver, who was later identified as Luan Carol Schmitt of New London, was traveling west bound on Highway 2 when it lost control and entered the north ditch near West Point Road coming to rest in a fence.

Schmitt was transported to Great River Health in Fort Madison where she succumbed from her
injuries.

This accident is still under investigation by the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
