Harold B. Wellman, 96, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 7:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2022, at his sons home in West Point. 

Born on July 20, 1925, in West Point, Iowa, the son of George and Veronica (Moeller) Wellman. On March 3, 1945, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he married Ruth E. Ponte. She preceded him in death on December 25, 1990.

Survivors include daughter: Kathleen (John) Hamilton of Smithville, Missouri; two sons: Marvin (Wilma) Wellman of West Point, Iowa, Raymond Wellman of West Point, Iowa; brother: Norb (Geri) Wellman of West Point, Iowa; sister: Adelle Stuecker of Saint Paul, Iowa; grandchildren: Kerry (Kenny) Cooper, Christopher (Cory) Wellman, Kim (Mike) Fullenkamp, Dan (Kris) Wellman, Geoffrey (Kristy) Wellman, Stefan (Tracy) Wellman, Andy (Amy) Hamilton, Jesse (Deidra) Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton; great grandchildren: Kole, Kameron, Caleb, Kendall, Cade, Gage, Shaylin, Elek, Evan, Kenzie, Raegan, Braylan, Enslee, Emily, Eliana, Sarah, Luke, Liam, Raelyn, Zander; and great-great grandchild: Izzie. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Ruth; daughter-in-law Eva; brothers: Leonard, Walter, Arnie, and Dick Wellman; sister: Laverne Hartley.

Harold was a member of Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Holtz-Geers American Legion Post 668. He was a United States Army World War II veteran. Harold worked for Sheaffer Pen Company for twenty years. He enjoyed farming, raising sheep and hogs, fishing, going to the casino, trips with the Passport Club and playing cards.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon, Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. and a Christian wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2022, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Father Dennis Hoffman as celebrant.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point, Iowa with full military rites presented by the West Point American Legion.

A memorial has been established in his memory for St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital or Saint Mary’s Catholic Church.
