Janet Joy Benner, 83 of Keokuk, IA died Friday, May 6, 2022 at her home.

     She was born September 26, 1938 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Wayne Harris and Beth “Dorothy” Edna Parker Stringfellow.  Janet graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1957 and later from LaSalle Extension University of Chicago where she received her Associates Degree. 

     On October 6, 1957 Janet was united in marriage to George Patrick “Pat” Benner at First Christian Church in Keokuk.  He preceded her in death on November 7, 2016.

     She had been employed as a business manager for Benner Farms for 60 years and had also worked as an office manager at River Hills for 10 years before her retirement in 2002.

     Janet was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star.

     Janet and her husband Pat loved to travel.  They toured all but four states in the US and also toured Canada on their motorcycle.  They vacationed in Ireland, Wales and England and also took an Alaskan cruise.  Janet enjoyed all types of sports and especially enjoyed motorcycles and NASCAR.  Family get-togethers were one of Janet’s favorite traditions.  Janet had a favorite quote “Make your words soft and sweet, you may have to eat them” that will be remembered by her family.

      She is survived by one daughter, Susan Christine Clancy of Keokuk, one son, Douglas Patrick Benner (Cindy) of Keokuk, four grandchildren, William “Bill” Hieatt (Lesley), Daniel Benner (Erin), Julia Benner and Makayla Clancy (Curtis McKune), eight great-grandchildren, Samantha Hieatt, Haley Hieatt,  Jack Benner, George Benner, Winifred Benner, Raven McKune, Ivy McKune and Azurite McKune and one great-great-grandchild, Elijah Haupt.  She is also survived by one brother, Jerry Stringfellow of Lafayette, IN, one brother-in-law, Stephen Benner (Dolores), one sister- in- law, Clarissa Benner, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins,

     Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother-in-law, John Benner, one niece, Melissa Benner, one sister-in-law, Marilyn Benner and three close friends, Mary Winkelman, Judy Loring and Marcy Huffman and several aunts, uncles and cousins.  

     There will be no services.

     The Vigen Memorial Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
