FORT MADISON - A match the day after clinching a share of the Southeast Conference girls soccer title meant everyone on Fort Madison’s team got a chance to play.
The Bloodhounds extended their winning streak to eight matches with a 6-0 victory over Mediapolis on Tuesday night at the Baxter Sports Complex.
And that was with coach Carrie Burken using everyone on the roster.
“I got everyone in, which was a good thing,” Burken said.
Fort Madison (11-2) needed double overtime on a hot night to defeat Mount Pleasant on Monday to share the conference crown with Burlington. That, combined with the heat and humidity on Tuesday and the fact the Bloodhounds play host to Davenport North on Thursday, made Burken want to give her starters as much rest as possible.
“It’s hot, and I wanted to rest people for Thursday,” Burken said. “I think I had all of the starters out with about 10 minutes left, so it’s nice heading into Thursday.”
The Bloodhounds had complete control against Mediapolis (5-9), which had a short bench because of a conflict with another school event.
“Initially, I thought how we were playing was OK,” Burken said. “I think it’s tough right after you win (the) conference to come back and focus. I think, from our starters, we saw a lot better (play) in the second half. We didn’t play horribly, didn’t give up any early goals or anything.”
Fort Madison scored three goals in each of the halves, and kept the Bulldogs from getting any sort of offense going.
“I know (goalkeeper) Taylor (Johnson) was pretty bored back there,” Burken said, laughing. “So that’s always a good night when you don’t have pressure on the goalie.”
Natalie Randolph, who scored the game-winning goal in Monday’s 4-3 win, started the Bloodhounds’ scoring in this match with a goal 1:20 into the first half. Teagan Snaadt added a goal 8 1/2 minutes later, then Taegan Denning’s goal with 26 seconds left in the half put Fort Madison up 3-0.
Snaadt had two more second-half goals and Coree James had a goal for the final margin.
