Pen City Current obituary – Mary "Jo" Griffin, 84, formerly of Burlington

Mary “Jo” Griffin passed away Thursday, May 5th, 2022, after a short stay at the Ocala Regional Hospital in Ocala, Florida.  She was born in Burlington, Iowa on November 18, 1937, to Harry Kirkpatrick and Wilma Genevieve (Raines) Smith.  At a young age she met and fell in love with James “Jim” Griffin, and they later married.  They were together for 39 years until his passing in March 1995.  Together they had 5 children.  She was a homemaker.   

Jo was proceeded in death by her mother and father, husband, youngest son Marty Griffin (October 21, 2009), youngest brother David Asher and oldest sister Ilene John.  She is survived by two sons; James J Griffin II of Austin, TX, and Clark Griffin and wife Nannette of Ft. Madison, Iowa, two daughters; Vickie Thomas and husband David of Ocala, FL, and Sharri Powell and husband Billy of Harrisburg, IL.  Jo also was survived by a brother, Larry Kirkpatrick, and 4 sisters, Annalee Lockridge, Judy Harding, Linda Neff and Connie Franklin.  Also surviving her were 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. 

Everyone that knew her knows how devoted she was to her family.  She would always welcome anyone to her home with open arms.  She loved to cook, sew, knit, quilt, arts and crafts, and gardening.  She loved animals, especially dogs, listening to music and most of all she loved to be around laughter.

Graveside services will be held at Metropolis Memorial Gardens on Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at 2:00 pm.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ocala Regional Hospital, TimberRidge Nursing and Rehab in Ocala Florida as well as Eldorado Rehab and Healthcare in Eldorado Illinois, for the wonderful care and love they provided to her.
