NLCHS to hold Memorial Day ceremony May 30

City/County offices to be closed for federal holiday

FORT MADISON - The Friends of Fort Madison Committee of the North Lee County Historical Society Announced today the annual Memorial Day ceremonies honoring the deceased soldiers that serviced at Fort Madison between 1808 and 1813 will be held at 9 a.m., Monday May 30. 

The service will be held around the Battlefield Memorial with guest speakers, a recitation of the names of the 22 known soldiers buried around the old Fort Madison site. 

Shortly after the honor guard from the Old Fort will form up and fire a volley in remembrance of the 22 known deceased U.S. Infantry soldiers that died while serving our country at Fort Madison. The ceremony will be approximately 30 minutes.

Officials with Lee County offices and Fort Madison City offices also announced that both offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. Fort Madison garbage routes typically collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday.

Both governmental agencies will resume regular hours on Tuesday, May 31.
