LEE COUNTY - A familiar name, and former Fort Madison dentist, has been tapped to fill the open Lee County Board position.

Lee County Auditor Denise Fraise released today that Charles Holmes has been appointed to fill the District 3 seat vacated by Rich Harlow when he announced his resignation in May.

The position was filled by appointment with the county auditor, Lee County Recorder Nancy Booten, and Lee County Treasurer Chris Spann selecting the replacement.

Iowa code allows for the three elected officials to make the selection if supervisors don't vote to have a special election.

"We are excited to have him on board," Fraise said in the release.

"His father was the Jefferson County Engineer so he has a background with county government."

Holmes is a former dentist in Fort Madison. He retired after 40 years in 2017 when he sold his practice to Dr. Mark Pothitakis. That practice still exists as Family Dentistry with two locations in Fort Madison.

A petition can be filed within 14 days of Holmes' appointment to request a special election. That petition would require 335 signatures based on a formula established by code based on the last general election.

Repeated attempts to reach Holmes for comment were unsuccessful.
