Crusaders down Columbus to snap two-game skid

WEST POINT - A 4-run fourth inning proved to be enough for the Holy Trinity girls in their 10-6 win over Columbus Friday.

The Crusaders held a 3-1 lead going into the fourth and gave up three runs in the top half before responded with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Junior Mary Hellige gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases with no outs in the fourth. Columbus' Lecet Quiroz hit a sac fly to right scoring one to make it 3-2. Hellige would get the next hitter out on strikes, but an error at short on a grounder in the next at bat scored two runs for 4-3 Columbus lead.

Hellige would give up a walk to put two runners on with two outs, but a strike out looking ended the threat.

Rachel Menke open the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single. Haile Cain lined then a sharp drive to center for the first out and senior Anna Sobczak, who's hitting about .570 on the year, singled moving Menke up a base.

Hellige then helped her own cause with a single on a bloop to right field to load the bases with one out.

Brooke Mueller grounded out to short scoring Menke and moving everyone up a spot with two outs. Kayla Box then came through with a single on short pop fly to center scoring Sobczak and moving Hellige to third. With HTC now up 5-4, Jenna DiPrima doubled on a line drive to center field scoring Hellige and Box for a 7-4 Crusader lead.

Hellige would retire the side in order in the fifth and then drive in two runs with a single past shortstop scoring Menke and Cain for a 9-4 lead, Kayla Box would reach on an error in centerfield plating Hellige for a 10-4 lead.

A lead-off double to Columbus' Jocelyn Fulton and an error at short put runners at 1st and 3rd with no one out. A grounder back to Hellige scored one run and Kennedy Wopking single to score another run and bring the Wildcats within four at 10-6 setting the final.

Hellige would get the next two hitters to retire the side and neither team would score again giving Hellige her fifth win of the year against four losses.

Sobczak went 4-for-4 at thep late with three runs scored. Hellige was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and 2 RBI. Kayla Box had 3 RBI and a run scored, while Cain, DiPrima and Menke all had hits for HTC.

Hellige gave up six runs, three earned on seven hits, while fanning six and walking three.

On Wednesday Wapello knocked off the visiting Crusaders 12-7. HTC had a 5-4 lead going into the fourth inning, but gave up three runs with two outs in the bottom half highlighted by a double to center that scored two.

Kylie Fortune would single to score two in the top of the sixth inning to pull the Crusaders to within one at 8-7. But the Arrows would put three more on in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Hellige went all six giving up 12 runs, but only four were earned while fanning three and walking four. DiPrima went 3-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI. Fortune had two RBI. Sobczak had two hits in the game, while Mueller, Kelli Meierotto, and Rachel Menke all had hits in the game.

The Crusaders (6-4)fell to Class 3A No. 4 West Burlington/Notre Dame 12-0 on Tuesday.

HTC (5-4, 3-2) takes on Cardinal (7-9, 4-2) at home Monday night.
