Central boys hold on for win over Hillcrest

DONNELLSON - Central Lee's Ryan Roberts earned the save in a 12-10 win over Hillcrest Academy Friday night in Donnellson.

The Hawks' Alex Sandoval got things going in the bottom of the first inning with a home run to left field that scored Corbin Pohren and Cory Jones for a 3-0 lead.

Jonny Snider had things in control on the mound for Central Lee getting the first four hitters out. But back-to-back singles in the top of the second led to a run for Hillcrest. A strikeout ended the inning but Hillcrest had cut into the lead 3-1.

Pohren would drive in another run in the bottom of the second with one out. Corey Jones would wear a pitch and Sandoval would pick up his fourth RBI of the game on a double to left. Jones would score on a passed ball and Sandavol would score on grounder from James Hemingson to make it 7-1 before the Ravens could get out of the inning.

Snider would give up a two-out solo home run to Luke Schrock on the first pitch to the hitter to cut the lead to 7-2, but he would get out of the inning without any further damage.

Central Lee would go down scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd, but Hillcrest would cut into the lead in the top of the fourth with an 2-run double to center by Grant Bender. Cory Jones would come on in relief of Snider and work a infield pop-up to end the top half.

The Hawks got a run from Jones with one out on a sac fly from Hemingson. Ryan Roberts would also drive in one on a fly ball that was mishandled by Hillcrest for a 9-4 lead.

The Ravens got three back in top of the 5th when Grant Bender doubled to Pohren in center making it a 9-7 game.

Jones would drive in Jonny Snider with a single to left. The Ravens wanted noting to do with Sandoval and gave him an intentional pass and then Tanner DeMoss made them pay for it with a single to left to make it 12-7. DeMoss would single to left scoring Sandavol and Hunter Gregory.

Hillcrest would make a game of it in the top of the sixth with freshman Chase Johnson pitching. Johnson would give up two walks and then an error at 2nd filled the bases. Josiah Beachy would fly out to Jones who would gun down Schrock at home on the tag for the double play.

With two outs Johnson hit the next batter and walked the following hitter to load the bases and then Hillcrest score on a passed ball to make it 12-8. A single to Mason Bender scored two more for a 12-10 game and then Johnson got a hitter to fan to end the top of the sixth.

Central Lee would go without a run in the bottom of the sixth. But Hillcrest could get another run across as the Hawks held out for the win.

Snider went 3 1/3 giving up five hits and four runs all earned, while four fanned and two walked. Roberts, Jones and Johnson each worked right around an inning combined giving up six runs on four hits.

Pohren and Sandoval each had a couple hits. Sandoval had four RBI and three runs scored to lead Central Lee.

On Thursday, the Hawks suffered a 17-4 loss to Class 1A No. 3 New London (14-0). Pohren and Snider had the only hits for Central Lee. The Tigers put up 7 runs in the first inning alone chasing starter Bo Herdrich.

New London would add six in the fifth inning for a 15-4 lead and Central couldn't plate a couple runs in the bottom half to stave off the 10-run rules in the fifth.

Central Falls to 6-9 on the year and hosts Notre Dame Monday before traveling to Van Buren on Tuesday.
