DONNELLSON — Three Central Lee students traveled to the University of Massachusetts to compete at the International Future Problem Solving Conference June 9-12.

Middle school student Aubrey Weber earned the opportunity to represent the state of Iowa at the conference for taking first place with her Community Problem Solving (CmPS) Project, "Sensing a Solution." CmPS is a team or individual competition in which students develop a solution to a challenge in their community and actively develop and enact solutions.

Aubrey worked with professionals and staff throughout the community to learn about building a sensory room at Central Lee Elementary. She also created more access to sensory materials throughout the school to help keep students engaged in learning.

At the International FPS Conference, Aubrey’s project was evaluated by a team of judges based on a submitted plan and final report and scrapbook of her project, a public service movie, an onsite interview, and the creative presentation of her work on a presentation board. She earned first place in the Middle Individual category and was recognized as the winner for her display among all middle competitors.

Additionally, two Central Lee eighth graders, MacKenzie Gerber and Abigail Hand, placed at the state competition for Scenario Writing. They researched the international topic of antibiotic resistance and submitted a short story. They also participated in several workshops at the University of Massachusetts to improve their skills for future competitions.

“We are incredibly proud of these three innovative middle school students for their outstanding performance in this year’s International FPS Conference,” said Hollie Weber, Central Lee Instructional Coach. “They have worked hard to prepare for this competition and have displayed amazing levels of creativity and critical thinking. They have done an excellent job of representing Central Lee at the highest level.”

All three of Central Lee’s International FPS students are working to raise the funds necessary to cover their registration and transportation costs for the competition. Anyone interested in donating or who is aware of an organization that may be willing to support the competitors is encouraged to contact Weber at hweber@centrallee.org or 319-835-9510.
