Hawkeyes' Perkins works out kids at Central Lee camp

Basketball camp features Iowa starting point guard Tuesday

DONNELLSON, IOWA — The Central Lee Community School District welcomed a special guest at its annual boys basketball camp on Tuesday. 

Iowa Hawkeye starting point guard Tony Perkins visited as one of many guest coaches lined up for this year’s camp.

“Any time we are able to host a major conference Division I athlete at Central Lee, it’s a special experience for our student-athletes,” said Kritter Hayes, Central Lee Boys Basketball Coach and Camp Director. “Tony is a major contributor for the reigning Big Ten champs, and he was a phenomenal guest coach for both our campers and our high school athletes assisting with instruction.”

Coach Hayes was able to secure a visit from Perkins due to the new name, image and likeness guidelines by the NCAA. Perkins led a clinic for 6th-8th grade and 3rd-5th grade boys on ball handling, offensive perimeter moves and shooting with movement. 

This is the second year of a redesigned Central Lee basketball camp that features several standout coaches and players. This year, the camp also featured OnPoint Hoops (Pro Development Team) Director of Player Personnel Billy Hiatt, Culver Stockton Girls’ Basketball coach Kellen Fernetti and SCC Girls’ Basketball Coach Jerry Jerome.

“Our camp experience is an important component of youth athlete development at Central Lee,” said Wes McGraw, Activities Director. “We want our athletes to develop skills, have fun, and create memorable experiences that bring them back into the gym to keep getting better. Having Tony Perkins here was a lot of fun for our campers.”

Central Lee has nearly 100 athletes signed up for its boys’ basketball camp this year, with 10 schools represented throughout the area. The school will also host a girls’ camp in July, featuring three Iowa Hawkeye women's players.
