Hawks late rallies come up short v. WB

DONNELLSON - Central Lee gave up a double and a two-run homer and a 2-run single in the top of the second to spot West Burlington a 4-0 early lead that the Hawks couldn't overcome.

West Burlington, now 9-8 overall and 5-6 in the SEI Superconference, took a 10-6 win from the Hawks Thursday night at Central Lee.

The Hawks (2-8, 7-11) rallied in the bottom of the seventh trailing 10-5. Grant Myhre tripled off Ryan Rogers who had come on in relief of Hunter Shipley in the sixth. Jonny Snider would drive him in on a ground out to third. Tommy Eschman then lined out to centerfielder Kaleb Allen who made the grab on a dead run in.

Bo Herdrich then lined a double through the gap in right center and Corbin Pohren would beat out a bunt single putting two on with two outs, but Hunter Edlin would fan to end the game.

The Falcons scored in the 2nd through 6th innings, while the Hawks put up two runs in the third and sixth to try and keep things close. West Burlington's Gabe Zurita homered to left in the 4-run second and Hayden Vandenberg homered to deep left with two outs in the top of the sixth scoring two. Vandenberg led everyone at the plate going 3-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Zurita went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

In the sixth inning, Central Lee put two runners on with one out when Pohren and Edlin both drew walks, forcing Shipley from the game. Then Alex Sandoval worked Rogers deep into the count before lacing a line drive to left that bounced in front of the right fielder coming in and carried over the fence for a ground rule double scoring both Pohren and Edlin to make it 10-5.

Rogers would work a ground out and a pop fly to strand Sandoval at 2nd and end the inning.

Sandoval was 1 for 2 on the night with 2 RBIs and a run scored to lead Central Lee. Pohren, Tanner DeMoss, James Hemingsen, Roberts, and Myhre all had hits for Central Lee. Hemingsen had 2 RBIs.

Roberts went 4 2/3 giving up 10 hits and eight runs, seven earned, while striking out four and walking three. Cory Jones came on in relief throwing 1 1/3, allowing two runs, both earned. Edlin came on in the seventh and struck out two, while giving up a walk.

The Hawks host Cardinal on Tuesday and Keokuk on Wednesday before kicking off Class 2A District 11 action against Cardinal in Eldon Saturday at 7 p.m.

Also in Central Lee's district with Cardinal is West Burlington, Mid-Prairie (Class 2A No. 8), Van Buren, and Mediapolis (Class 2A No. 9).
