BLOOMFIELD - Fort Madison had a quick 2-0 lead after three innings, but Davis County came roaring back in the fourth with eight runs en route to a 12-2 win over the Lady Hounds Tuesday night.

Fort Madison opened the scoring in the non-conference matchup in the first inning when Neeley Rehm singled scoring courtesy runner Macey McLees with two outs. The Hounds put up another run in the second when Logan Johnson's fielder's choice to short brought Taylor Johnson in for a 2-0 lead.

Lauryn Helmick kept the Mustangs in check through the first three allowing just one single and a base on balls.

Fort Madison got just a walk in the top of the fourth before the half was retired and Davis County came alive.

Helmick, who'd worked a bevy of pop-ups and fly outs through three, started the same with a pop up back to her in the circle for the first out in the bottom half of the fourth.

But then things started to unravel for the sophomore hurler as Davis County put together a single and an RBI double back to back. Helmick then walked a batter, and a couple infield errors moved Mustang girls around for a 2-2 tie.

Rachel McFarland's RBI single to center gave the Mustangs what proved to be the game-winner at 3-2. Another infield error loaded the bases and then a sac fly made it 4-2 with the tag from third.

Laynee Moore the laced a 2-run double to Taylor Johnson in left field for a 6-2 lead and back-to-back singles made it 8-2 before Helmick got a strike out to end the rally.

Madeline Barker kept the Hounds in check the rest of the way while her offense put up four more of the next two to end it in six with the 10-run rule at 12-2.

Lexi Whaley, Rehm, Helmick, and Taylor Johnson had the hits for Fort Madison. Helmick went four innings giving up eight runs, but just two were earned. She struck out two and walked two in the loss. Erika Kruse came on in relief with a line of five hits, four earned runs and two strikes.

The Hounds fall to 19-12 overall and travel to New London tonight for JV/Varsity doubleheader starting at 5:30. They wrap up the regular season Friday with a double header at Burlington.

Class 4A Regional quarterfinals are Thursday July 7 at Fort Madison with a 7 p.m. start against Keokuk.
