FORT MADISON - A deceased body was found in a Fort Madison creek Saturday afternoon.
Officers with the Fort Madison Police Department were dispatched to the creek behind Vinnie’s Longbranch bar at 2601 Avenue L where the reporting party had discovered the body.
The reporting party advised officers that he detected a foul odor eminating from the creek and had located a dead body.
Officers arrived at the scene, where a thorough investigation was completed.
Fort Madison Police Chief Cody Potthast said no identification of the body has been determined and circumstances surrounding the incident are still unknown. Decomposition of the body hindered any identifiable characteristics on scene.
He said an autopsy has been ordered by the Lee County Medical Examiner and DNA will be tested.
He said the investigation is ongoing.
