FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison softball  team may be happy they won’t have to face Fairfield again for a while. The Trojans took three games in three days from the Bloodhounds with a 7-1 loss at Baxter Sports Complex Thursday night.
Neeley Rehm took the loss for the Hounds Thursday going all seven innings giving up seven runs, only two earned while striking out five and walking five.
Fort Madison managed only two hits on the night, one each from Elle Ruble and Elizabeth Tanner. Olivia Buckner scored the only run in the bottom of the fifth courtesy running for Tanner after her base hit. Ruble had doubled to lead off the fifth but was thrown at home trying to score on Tanner’s base hit.
Fairfield opened the scoring with a 3-run third inning. Coty Engle walked and Savannah Hollander singled to put two on but Rehm got the next two hitters before giving up a 2-run single to Peyton McCabe for her only earned runs of the night.  McCabe would come around to score after Rehm gave up back-to-back walks and a suffered an error on a grounder to first to allow McCabe to score before retiring the side on a pop-out to third.
Rehm would hold the Trojans in check through four and five, but would suffer four unearned runs in the top of the sixth.
Fairfield worked two walks to open the frame and then a fielder’s choice and an error at first allowed a run to come in. With the bases loaded Laney Norris got plunked and then Morgan Ament singled driving in two to set the final score.
The Hounds fall to 2-4 on the year, 0-3 in Southeast Conference play and host Washington Monday night in a doubleheader starting at 5:30 at the Baxter’s.
