Read With Your Friends and Family
Some of my fondest memories are of reading with others. I remember as a child my mom reading books to me, and not just at bedtime. My dad and I have read books at the same time and discussed them as he has introduced me to some of his favorites. As an aunt, I loved reading to my niece and nephews as well as listening to my brother read to his children. During the early days of Covid, I read “The Secret Garden” and “Moby Dick” with my parents to help maintain connections with other people. I enjoy reading the books for the library’s monthly book discussion and then discussing them with the other attendees.
November 1 is Family Literacy Day. Make a point of reading with your family, whether that is a biological family or a chosen family. Then keep going throughout the month of November. Try to read together a little bit each day and see if you can complete the Beanstack “Fall Into Reading” challenge. Sign-up for this month long reading challenge through Beanstack (Fortmadison.beanstack.org) and see if you can read 300 minutes during the month of November, that’s just 10 minutes a day.
Friends of the Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Fort Madison Public Library will be holding their next book sale Thursday, November 17, Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19. Many new books have been added to the sale. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to expand your personal book collection and help support your local public library.
Have you ever tried a book advent calendar? Buy 25 books, wrap each of them in plain or fancy wrapping paper and then open one each day leading up to Christmas. The Friends sack sale on Saturday is a great way to get 25 books for $2.
While we appreciate everyone’s donations, please do not bring any new donations to the library until after the November Friends of the Library sale. We don’t have room for them right now.
Community Calendar
We have begun adding community events to the online library calendar at https://fortmadison.librarycalendar.com. Events are added to the calendar as they are submitted by community organizations using the form found here https://tinyurl.com/547jam3h. Does your group have an upcoming community event? Let us know by submitting it through the form. Most community events open to the public are eligible for inclusion in the community calendar.

Upcoming Events at the Fort Madison Public Library –
Library Closings in November – The library will be closed Friday, November 11 for the Veteran’s Day Holiday. The Library will also be closed on Friday, November 24 and 25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The library will be open on Saturday, November 26.
Pre-School/Toddler Story Hour –Wednesday morning at 10:30.
Hang Teen – Tuesday, 3:30-5:00 for ages 12-19, except on November 1 and 29.
Minecraft –3:30-5:00, all ages on Mondays, except on November 28.
Once Upon a Wednesday –Join us from 1:30-2:30 for a variety of adventures. November 2 will be a scarecrow craft. November 9 will be a turkey themed food craft. Lee County Conservation will be joining us on November 16 for a spider puppet show beginning at 1:30. November 30 will be making leaf wind chimes.
Thursday Crafternoon –Thursday, 3:30-5:00, for ages 14-adult. This program is an opportunity to spend some time working on an in-depth project for the whole month.
All Booked Up! - The library's book discussion group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. On Thursday, November 3, we will be discussing "Help Me!” by Marianne Power. On December 1, we will be discussing “Seven Days of Us” by Francesca Hornak.
Cook the Book –November 8, at 6:00 pm, we will be sharing recipes selected from “The Tiny Kitchen Cookbook” by Annie Mahle.
