FAIRFIELD – The Lady Hounds volleyball team fell to Fairfield 1-3 Tuesday night on the road.
The Trojans won the first set 21-25 and then the FM ladies rebounded with a 25-22 hard-fought win. Fort Madison then dropped the next two 15-25, 20-25 for a Southeast Conference loss. The Hounds fall to 1-2 in conference play and 4-14 overall.
“The girls fought hard all night, and overcame a large deficit in game one to win. I continue to be impressed with their ability to try new things without much practice,” said Head Coach Kelly Knustrom.
“Alaina Schwerin came up with some big plays for us tonight, especially in the blocking column. Her game continues to improve as her confidence grows. Sydney McEntee found her groove with Mara Smith again tonight and ran some really good offense.”
Knustrom said Dayonna Davis, who had 15 kills and 15 digs with two blocks, looked really sharp on the pin.
“She is fun to watch when she elevates her game the way she did tonight,” she said.
McEntee had eight kills and a block. Smith had 39 assists and was 16-16 serving with a block.
Knustrom said Kylie Lumino and Mackenzie Huebner played great defense and continue to look for ways to improve their game and help put their team in positions to succeed. Lumino and Huebner combined for 26 digs and five aces on the night.
Alivia Holmes had a strong service night going 19-19 with four aces, while Olivia Buckner and Dacee Marshall both served 100% off the bench.
“It’s not the outcome we want, but lots of positive things to build on this week,” Knustrom said.
The junior varsity and freshmen fell both 0-2. All three teams play West Hancock on the road Monday.
