HTC girls go cold in OT loss to WB

Lady Crusaders rally in second half to force extra session

FORT MADISON - Holy Trinity’s fourth-quarter comeback was built on making shots.
Those same shots wouldn’t fall in overtime.
The Crusaders scored just one point in overtime in the 48-40 loss to the Falcons in Friday’s SEI Superconference South Division girls basketball game at Shottenkirk Gym.
Holy Trinity (1-2 overall, 0-2 division) had a 15-1 run in the fourth quarter to push the game to the extra session.
But when the Crusaders needed points, they couldn’t get the shots.
“I would bet in overtime, we missed five or six shots in the lane,” Holy Trinity coach Tony Johnson said. “Like I told them, if those start going in, when those start going in, that’s when you’ll start winning more close games. It’s just a matter of finishing.”
The Crusaders trailed 38-24 with 7:25 to play in the fourth quarter when they began to rally. And when Teagan Snaadt hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 to go, Holy Trinity had tied the game at 39.
Holy Trinity had a chance to win the game after West Burlington (1-1, 1-1) missed two front ends of one-and-bonus free throws in the final minute. But Mary Hellige’s shot was partially blocked and Presley Myers missed the putback.
The most frustrating misses for the Crusaders came when they were down 41-39 with under two minutes to play. Myers and Snaadt both missed close shots inside. Snaadt would get the Crusaders to within 41-40 seconds later by making the second of two free throws, then the Falcons closed the game with seven unanswered points.
Johnson liked how his team answered the Falcons in the second half.
“I thought the third quarter, they played more together,” Johnson said. “The ball movement improved. The ball movement the first half was stale. We have got to move the ball. We can’t pound it into the floor, try to take everybody one-on-one. That’s not us, that’s never going to be us.”
Snaadt led the Crusaders with 12 points. Kayla Box had 11.
Abigail Bence led West Burlington with 26 points. Kennedy Ritter had 13 points.
“The wins are going to come,” Johnson said. “I see the gains from where we were a couple of weeks ago. It’s a day-and-night difference.”
